The ‘hand grenade’ found at Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station, Majestic, on Friday morning has turned out to be a ‘simulator hand grenade’ belonging to the Indian Army. It is used for training, investigations have revealed.
The Defence Ministry on Tuesday confirmed that the hand grenade found at KSR Railway Station last week was a simulator that belonged to the army. It was part of a consignment that was being sent from Bengaluru to Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh on May 10.
“The consignment was to be delivered at Jhansi, but is yet to be delivered. The consignee unit at Jhansi has been in contact with the railway authorities at that station, and had been told that the parcels are not traceable,” said the Ministry of Defence in a press release on Tuesday.
It clarified that the item, which caused widespread panic in the city when it was discovered at the station last week, is meant only for training purposes and does not have any explosive content. “The matter is being resolved in conjunction with railway authorities,” read the release.
On May 31 around 8.45 a.m., the Railways Security Control had reported that a hand grenade had been found in the trolley path of Platform Number – 1 of the station. Platforms 1 and 2 were cordoned off, and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad was called.
The city police, on Tuesday, announced that a forensic report had revealed that the item was not a weapon, but a simulator belonging to the army.
“The army workshop in Bengaluru identified the ‘simulator hand grenade’ from a photograph in a newspaper on June 1 and decided to check with army units which had recently collected the same,” read the release.
