Four dead in 'devastating' shooting in Australian city of Darwin

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) A man had been arrested after a gunman killed four people and injured another at five different locations in the northern Australian city of Darwin, local authorities said on Tuesday (June 4) night, in one of the country's most violent attacks in years.

Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw said the man, who was known to police, had acted alone and had been taken into custody within an hour of the first gun shots being reported.

Police had identified five crime scenes, including pubs and park and a convenience store in the central district of Darwin, and over 100 police remain at the scenes.

The man, who had been on parole since January, is believed to have used a shotgun, Kershaw said, but the investigation was ongoing.

Australia has some of the world's toughest gun control laws, adopted after its worst mass murder, when a gunman killed 35 people at Port Arthur in the island state of Tasmania.
