How long before every Aussie drives a ute? Skoda designs a new sporty-looking single cab concept

  • Skoda have shown its own take on a popular ute with the Mountiaq concept
  • A design team of 35 students cut apart the popular Kodiaq SUV and rebuilt it
  • The ute features a winch, light bars, under-body armour and a nudge bar

Skoda seems keen to cash in on the top selling ute market in Australia, showing off a sporty new concept design for its take on the work horse.

The two-door off-road ute was shown off by the Czech manufacturer who tasked a team of 35 students to cut apart an existing Kodiaq SUV and labelled it the  Mountiaq.

The students worked on the project for around 2,000 hours to create the adventure focused vehicle painted in a striking Sunset Orange.

The rugged looking ute is packed with a winch, light bars, along with under-body armour and a nudge bar to create a properly functioning ute.

The ride height of the ute has been raised and is fitted with wider tires for more grip on and off road.

A special false bottom tray has been fitted with separate compartments to keep a host of weekend goods.

They also added included the 2.0 TSI four cylinder engine developing 140 kWs to bring the power in line with other rivals.

How well the dressed up family friendly SUV would endure being bashed around at a work site or driven off road is unknown but it shows that Skoda is at least considering the idea of a ute.

Ford's Raptor, Toyota's Hilux, Volkswagen's Amorok have all enjoyed tremendous sales success in Australia and more are adding them to its line up with Mercedes launching its X Class dual cab ute last year.

Holden also started importing and converting the physically huge Chevrolet Silverado from the US as Australians continue to look for bigger options.

Manufacturers have increasingly been adding utes to their line ups as Australian's find a happy medium in the sizeable cars as a family car and work horse.

Volkswagen Group - that owns Skoda - also unveiled the Volkswagen Tanoak concept in late 2018 to show off what a softer version of the existing Amarok ute would look like to compete in the growing luxury ute market.
