BHUBANESWAR: The announcement by the
Council of Higher Secondary Education (
CHSE) that it will declare the results of the arts and commerce streams in the third week of June has irked students who want to pursue higher education outside the state.
"I fail to understand the discrimination. While the science results have been announced, the humanities (arts) and commerce results have been delayed. Our career is equally important," said Samapika Dash, a student of Plus II arts in BJB Junior College.
Dash said she might lose the chance of applying to Christ University, Bengaluru, due to the delay in the publication of results. The last date of application for a number of programmes is June 5, while registration for some will be closed on June 19. "If our results are published in the third week of June, we won't be able to apply to these institutes," she said.
Several arts and commerce students voiced similar fears and said the inordinate delay in the publication of results had left them worried.
"We are trying to publish the results quickly but it may not be possible before the third week of June. Tabulation and other works are still on," said CHSE controller of examination Bijay Kumar Sahu.
Sources in CHSE said the results of the science stream were usually declared before that of the arts, commerce and vocational streams because science students have to appear for different engineering and medical colleges exams and national-level entrance tests.
"The council should change its functioning as the students of arts and commerce also appear for many entrance tests like admission to law universities. How can the government take them for granted simply because they are studying arts and commerce?" wondered Purna Chandra Pani, a parent.
As many as 2,35,183 students have appeared for the exam from the arts stream while 27,278 and 8,058 students have appeared for it from the commerce and vocational streams, respectively.
