Gang ransacks Anna Nagar store, escapes with Rs 53,000

A grab from CCTV camera footage of the attack
CHENNAI: Police have launched a search for 15 men who barged into a supermarket in Anna Nagar on Sunday, attacked employees, damaged property and took away Rs 53,000.
The trouble began around 2.30pm when a man, who police later identified as Saravanan, entered the supermarket on 18th Main Road and picked up an argument with a 19-year-old woman employee.
When the man tried to drag her out, shop owner S Senthil Murugan asked two supervisors to stop him. The employees chased him out of the shop.
After about 30 minutes, Saravanan, reached the shop with 15 men in tow. The gang members broke the CCTV cameras at the entrance and entered.
The group then started attacking supervisors Karthikaselvan and Senthil.
They began breaking glasses and threw away a large quantity of food items stocked in the store.
“Since there were only ten employees at the shop, they could not overpower the gang. They first tried to defend themselves but later ran for safety,” said an investigating officer. The gang took away Rs 53,000. Though the employees cried out for help the gang managed to escape.
Senthil Murugan lodged a complaint at the Tirumangalam police station and a case has been registered.

Police said Saravanan came to confront the girl after his attempts. He had earlier tried to talk to the girl outside the shop.
Karthikaselvan who sustained severe injures on his spine is undergoing treatment at a government hospital.
