Nagpur: Over 40 associations representing castes and communities coming under general (unreserved) category apart from many professional and commercial bodies have declared full support to ‘Save Merit, Save Nation’ campaign that has been started in Nagpur to oppose more than 50% quota in education.
The opponents have decided to take out a grand rally from Yashwant Stadium to Samvidhan Chowk (RBI Square) on June 7 to highlight their concerns. The rally will start at 4pm on Friday and will culminate at 7pm.
Representatives of Maheshwari Samaj, Agrawal Samaj, Arya Samaj, Sanatan Dharma Sabha, Arya Vaish Samaj, Vidarbha Kayasth Samaj, Akhil Bharatiya Brahmin Mahasangh, Uttar Bharatiya Brahmin Samaj, Intezamia Committee from Mehdibagh, Sikh Samaj, South Indian Association, Kerala Catholic Association, Catholic Association of Nagpur, Bengali Association, Jain Samaj and Vidarbha Central Sindhi Panchayat along with many others addressed a joint press conference on Tuesday and reasserted that the limit of reservation in education as well as in jobs should be kept up to 50% only and should not be exceeded beyond this limit as it is unconstitutional.
“General category constitutes more than 38% of the population and its members have united under ‘Save Merit, Save Nation’ banner. We all are concerned over reducing number of seats for open category students in schools, colleges, post-graduation courses and in jobs too,” said Hemant Gandhi of Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce.
“Supreme Court has already fixed the upper limit of 50% for reservation in education and jobs. Remaining 50% has been left open for merit holders. There is no barrier of caste, religion in the remaining 50% as the same is for merit holders of all communities,” said Suresh Jayasi of Vidarbha Central Sindhi Panchayat.
‘Save Merit, Save Nation’ activists have appealed to supporters of merit from all religions and communities to attend the rally.
