PUNE: Students applying for admission in
Savitribai Phule Pune University for their master’s degrees must up their game by going through the subject matter and brush up their aptitude skills.
This year, all departments are conducting entrance exams for admissions as opposed to only some departments till last year. There will be negative marking in the assessment for wrong answers, for the first time. The entrance examination dates were declared on the website on Friday.
SPPU had extended the dates for applying to all of its postgraduate, undergraduate and interdisciplinary courses to June 3 from May 25. There will be multiple test centres in all three districts of
Nashik, Pune and Ahmednagar. The question paper is 80-20 pattern where the aptitude segment is common to all and the 80 marks is subject specific.
Radhika Seshan, head of the history department at SPPU, said, “Till now, our department did not have an entrance exam for admission. Hence, we do not have any previous year’s question paper to upload. However, we have uploaded on our website the books from which questions will be asked for the entrance exam. We have tried to keep the syllabus at par with the SPPU graduation syllabus and the syllabus generally followed in the country at the undergraduate level for history so that no student is at a disadvantage.”
TV Ramanathan, head of statistics department said that the department had put up the syllabus for the entrance examination on the website. “We have been conducting an entrance exam for the past 10-15 years. We used to have 50 questions of 2 marks each with 2/3 negative marking for each wrong answer. However, now we will be following the central pattern of admission. It required two marks because these are not single word answers. Most require some calculations and hence two marks seemed appropriate for them.”
Praful Pawar, registrar at the varsity, said they will not be conducting any interview after the written examination to make the process transparent. “Except for the Centre for Performing Arts, we have not kept an interview in any department. A student’s understanding of performing arts cannot be gauged only through a written examination. If one is a singer, you need to hear him sing or if she is a dancer, one needs to see how she dances to understand the level of excellence. Hence, 50 marks will be allotted for the entrance exam but the remaining will be given for practical,” Pawar said.
