Bhubaneswar: The Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) announced the results of the annual higher secondary examination (Plus II science) here on Monday.
The average pass percentage was 72.33 as against last year’s 76.98. Yet again, girls outperformed boys. Their pass percentage was 75.02 as against boys’ 70.4.
“This year, all the examination centres were under CCTV camera surveillance. This reduced incidents of malpractice, leading to a drop in the pass percentage,” said school and mass education minister Samir Ranjan Dash.
Bhubani Shankar Patnaik of BJB Higher Secondary School topped the science stream by securing 559 out of 600 marks (93.15 per cent) while Subhashree Moharana of the same school came second by securing 558. Anshuman Kar of Jupiter Science Higher Secondary School secured the third position with 557 marks.
The council does not officially publish a merit list.
Though the pass percentage had dropped, the overall result was better than last year’s, the CHSE authorities claimed. This year, 60 students scored above 90 per cent as opposed to 41 last year. As many as 20,806 (29.42 per cent) students passed in the first division, against 19,561 (26.72 per cent) last year. A total of 23,904 (33.81 per cent) passed in the second division and 25,360 (35.87 per cent) passed in the third division. Last year, 33 per cent and 39.57 per cent students passed in the second and third division, respectively.
“Our buildings were occupied due to the elections. Then, Cyclone Fani hit the state, leading to severe disruption and delay in the evaluation process,” said director of CHSE, Amarendra Patnaik.
There has been a substantial drop in the pass percentage of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students compared to last year. The pass percentage of SC and ST students was 65.21 and 51.90, respectively, as opposed to last year’s corresponding figures of 70.13 and 58.78.
Nine higher secondary schools in the state reported zero results and 29 schools recorded 100 per cent results. “Explanations will be sought from the school authorities with zero results and action will be taken against them,” said the minister.
Among the districts, Balasore recorded the highest pass percentage of 86.56 while Gajapati recorded the lowest, 36.20.
Students can apply for rechecking and re-addition of marks by June 6 and the results will be provided within 15 days of application.
