BBMP files complaint against company carrying out TenderSURE work

The spruced up Church Street, the pride of the civic body, was damaged after a road roller was driven on the newly-laid cobble stones from the Brigade Road side to Empire restaurant on the other side on Sunday.

Movement of heavy vehicles on the stretch is banned.

The Cubbon Park police have registered a case against the company carrying out TenderSURE work.

Based on a complaint filed by Srinivasulu, Health Officer of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Shivajinagar sub-division, the police charged the driver of the road roller under the Prevention of Destruction and Loss of Property Act.

In his complaint, Mr. Srinivasulu said he was on night rounds when he received a complaint from the control room around 1 a.m. about the road roller moving on Church Street. He rushed to the spot and found Indra Kumar driving the vehicle on the newly-laid cobble stones. Upon inquiry, it was found that Indra Kumar was newly appointed and claimed not to know about the ban on heavy vehicles on the road.

“It is sheer negligence on the part of the company carrying out TenderSURE works that they have not briefed the driver about the ongoing project,” Mr. Srinivasulu said.

The matter was brought to the notice of higher-ups, following which a complaint was filed against the company with the Cubbon Park police on Sunday.

The police, who questioned the driver, said that Indra Kumar was on contract work for TenderSURE work on Brigade Road.

"He drove the road roller from Brigade Road junction to Hotel Empire. The police have sought an estimate of the damage caused to the cobble stones," a senior police officer said.

The police have summoned the company officials for an explanation.

The project of laying cobble stones on Church Street was done primarily for aesthetics. The cost of the work on the entire stretch was around ₹ 14 crore, he added.
