SMC proposes to distribute 1.5 lakh saplings in city

Surat: Several organizations have made elaborate plans to celebrate World Environment Day in the city on Wednesday. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) proposes to distribute and plant 1.5 lakh saplings along with volunteers of non-government organizations and also take out a swacchata rally in the city.
Urban Health Climate Resilience Centre (UHCRC), SMC, Climate Conscious Network, Mahila Sahakari Udyog Mandir, Ramkrishna Smavedna Trust, Grow Native Green and Prakruti will hold several programmes aimed at building community participation in environment management.

Dr Vikas Desai, executive director of UHCRC, said, “Air pollution is the theme of World Environment Day to be celebrated on June 5. We plan to give basic knowledge to people on how to reduce air pollution in residential areas. We can achieve this by simply reducing the number of diesel and petrol vehicles. We will also raise awareness on water conservation, heatwave, effects of mosquitoes on environment, solid waste disposal and tree plantation among other things.”
SMC officials propose to plant 10 lakh saplings in the current year. They will distribute 1.5 lakh saplings to people on World Environment Day. Maximum plantation will be done in the upcoming biodiversity park at Althan.
