VW ID.R Might Have Already Broken The Nurburgring Lap Record For EVs

Volkswagen began testing the ID.R on the Nurburgring at the end of April with a clear goal in mind: fine-tuning everything in an attempt to break the lap record for electric vehicles. Right now, it appears they may have done so.

According to a Facebook post by ‘Nurburgring Bridge to Gantry’, which has also shared a few images of the vehicle on the German track, Volkswagen might have already broken the record. The caption accompanying the post claims that the run “was both fast and successful”.

Not only that, but at the end of the final lap, representatives “cheered and whistled”.

If they have indeed broken the record for electric vehicles, then we should see an official confirmation very soon, as well as a video of the entire run. As for the number that had to be beaten, that would be 6 minutes and 45.90 seconds, a record set in 2017 by the NIO EP9, with Romain Dumas sitting in the driver’s seat.

Compared to its rival, which has a whopping 1,360 PS (1,341 hp / 1,000 kW) of combined output produced by the four electric motors, the ID.R has a more humble 680 PS (670 hp / 500 kW). However, it’s nearly half a second faster than the EP9 to 100 km/h (62 mph), which takes only 2.25 seconds; top speed in the VW EV racer is 270 km/h (168 mph).

The ID.R also features some serious state-of-the-art tech, like glycerin used to recharge the air-cooled battery pack. But you can read all about that here.
