Kerala Congress Chief Mullappally Ramachandran has expelled former legislator AP Abdullakutty from Kannur for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Abdullakutty was a member of Parliament from CPI(M) from 1999 to 2009. After he was expelled from the party, he joined the Congress.
Congress also expelled Abdullakutty for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comparing him to Mahatma Gandhi. The expelled Congress leader said the Prime Minister’s way of governance reflects his Gandhian values.
According to the press release issued by Kerala PCC, Abdullakutty has been acting against the interest of the party and taking opportunistic stands to defame Congress and its workers.
52-year-old Abdullakutty shot to fame after defeating Congress's Mullappally Ramachandran as a CPI(M) candidate. Mullappally had been representing Kannur since 1984 for 15 years.
Later, Abdullakutty fell out with the CPI(M) leadership because of his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He had praised the Prime Minister when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Abdullakutty had praised him for the developmental work he did in Gujarat.
After losing the assembly poll in 2016, Abdullakutty remained as a back-bencher in Congress. Meanwhile, the BJP offered him a political rebirth if he joins the party.
Cooling his heels for long, Abdullakutty is looking for new pastures. Now, he is heading for the BJP. They will use him politically as he is a convenient proposition, a Congress leader told India Today.
Abdullakutty can do more harm for Congress when he is out of the party. He has a network and can go to extremes. BJP needs a person from minority to play in the front, the leader pointed out
The migration of party workers from Congress to BJP has started in Kerala.
