Little boy at centre of nail-biting rescue after climbing into chimney
An eight-year-old boy was the subject of a nail-biting rescue attempt on Sunday after climbing into a chimney and getting stuck.
Police, firefighters and ambulance officers were summoned to the home in Katanning, in Western Australia's south-west, by the boy's mother about 10am.
The boy had climbed up the chimney and got stuck beyond the choke point, where police said he "could be heard breathing, but was in considerable difficulty".
An officer lay on her back and used her arms to support the boy’s legs while trying to calm him with words of encouragement, helped by the boy’s mother.
Firefighters and carefully removed the plasterboard and bricks until they could insert an oxygen line, and continued to remove bricks until they could get the boy through the opening.
He was taken to the regional hospital as a precaution and is now recovering at home with his family.
