HIGHLIGHTS

  • 22:57 (IST)

VICTORY! What a stunning show by Bangladesh. They put the runs on the board with all the experienced lads getting their A game out and then backed it up with a thorough professional performance with the ball. Mustafizur Rahman was the leading wicket taker while Saifuddin took two wickets. Mehidy Hasan too bowled brilliantly going at just 4.4 runs at over despite bowling in the Powerplay. Second straight loss for South Africa and boy do they have a mountain to climb with India approaching.

  • 22:56 (IST)

Well, Rabada started the last over with a mighty hack over deep midwicket but Rahman ensured there weren't any further lapses. Bangladesh win by 21 runs and get their World Cup campaign off to a memorable start.

  • 22:44 (IST)

OUT! Rahman puts the final nail in the South African coffin. Bangs this one short, Duminy is in no position to play the pull and ends up inside-edging it back onto his stumps. This has been a thoroughly professional performance from the Bangladeshis and will keep them in really good stead going forward.

  • 22:40 (IST)

Another one falls to a full toss and Bangladesh are now really tightening the noose.  Knee high full bunger from Rahman, Morris gets the elevation but not the distance and Sarkar at deep midwicket did not have to move an inch to complete the catch. South Africa 276/7 needing a further 55 off 24 balls.

  • 22:22 (IST)

South Africa won't really mind where the runs one from as long as they come. Duminy gets an under-edge off Saifuddin that runs wide of short third man. This came on the back of a four down to fine leg against Shakib in the previous over.

  • 22:06 (IST)

GOT'EM! Saifuddin, you beauty! Full and straight, you miss I hit kind of length and hit Saifuddin has. Gets one on the stumps, van der Dussen's eyes light up as he goes for the almighty heave. Does not get anywhere close to the ball and the off and middle stump takes an absolute battering. South Africa 228/5 and staring down a deep hole.

  • 21:53 (IST)

Does another one bite the dust? The umpire has adjudged Duminy lbw but the batsman has reviewed the decision. Looked really good on first glance. Rahman gets one to nip back into the left-hander who playing across the line misses. The only issue was the height, and yes that is what saves him. The tracker shows the ball would have gone over the stumps. Duminy lives to fight another day.

  • 21:40 (IST)

Off the leading edge and gone. Rahman should have had him in the Miller in his previous over but gets him now. That was a top delivery on all counts. Length ball slightly outside off, Miller looking to work in towards the on side closes the bat face early,  gets a thick edge and the catch is snapped up nicely at backward point by Mehidy. Bangladesh well and truly on top now. South Africa 202/4 after 35.1 overs.

  • 21:31 (IST)

What happened there? Mahmudullah has totally misjudged what should have been a relatively easy catch. Rahman brought back into the attack, drops one short. Miller mistimes the upper cut but Mahmudullah does not realise that and thinks the ball is sailing over his head. Instead, it falls just short of him. More grief for the fielder as the crowd behind him gives him an earful. South Africa 196/3 after 34 overs.

  • 21:17 (IST)

DROPPED! Could that be the luck the Saffers needed? Miller skips down the track to Shakib in a bid to loft him over mid-off but doesn't get all of it. Soumya Sarkar leaps but fails to hang on as he mistimes his jump. That ideally should have been taken. The very over, van der Dussen miscues Shakib but the ball falls in no man's land wide of long-off. They certainly are living slightly dangerously. South Africa 160/3 after 30 overs.

  • 21:06 (IST)

Oh, what an inspired bowling change from Mortaza and what a massive wicket this for Bangladesh. Du Plessis gets greedy and looks to after Mehidy but is beaten all ends up. Gently flighted by the bowler, the South African captain races down the track only to miss it completely. He falls for a well-compiled 62 but Bangladesh are on top now.

  • 20:54 (IST)

Du Plessis is trying his best to move around the crease, manufacture a few shots but has largely been restricted by some tight bowling from the pair of Mosaddek and Shakib.

22:53 (IST)

Last over of the chase coming up, South Africa need 33 from six balls. Can still happen but looks more and more like formality.

22:44 (IST)

OUT! Rahman puts the final nail in the South African coffin. Bangs this one short, Duminy is in no position to play the pull and ends up inside-edging it back onto his stumps. This has been a thoroughly professional performance from the Bangladeshis and will keep them in really good stead going forward.

22:33 (IST)
22:32 (IST)

Another top notch over from Saifuddin. Concedes just nine off it despite bowling a wide and a no-ball. The boundaries have totally dried up for the South Africans and they will really need a miracle to get a win from here. 63 required off 30 balls.

22:26 (IST)

Shakib finishes off well, concedes just 7 runs off his final over and Bangladesh are slowly tightening the screws. South Africa are 259/6 and the required rate has now crept to 12 runs an over.

22:22 (IST)

South Africa won't really mind where the runs one from as long as they come. Duminy gets an under-edge off Saifuddin that runs wide of short third man. This came on the back of a four down to fine leg against Shakib in the previous over.

Just when I typed that South Africa were still in it, Phehlukwayo has thrown it away and that too off a full toss. Knee high, could have been dispatched anywhere on the field, Phehlukwayo just manages to mistime it straight to Shakib at extra cover. South Africa six down now needing 79 in 53 balls.

22:16 (IST)

South Africa still in it

22:13 (IST)

Andile Phehlukwayo sets off in style spanking Mortaza to the deep cover fence. We are into the last nine overs and South Africa need over 10 runs an over. It is not going to be easy but with Phehlukwayo, who can hit a long ball and Duminy in, they still have a chance even though pretty thin. They are on 238/5 after 41 overs needing a further 93 runs to win

22:06 (IST)

22:00 (IST)

Van der Dussen is keeping South Africa alive in this chase. Goes after Rahman and absolutely wallops him over long on for a massive six and then follows it up with a fierce cut wide of point. The required rate has crept upto 9.36 an over and the Proteas will need to up their boundary count now on.

21:53 (IST)

Does another one bite the dust? The umpire has adjudged Duminy lbw but the batsman has reviewed the decision. Looked really good on first glance. Rahman gets one to nip back into the left-hander who playing across the line misses. The only issue was the height, and yes that is what saves him. The tracker shows the ball would have gone over the stumps. Duminy lives to fight another day.

21:48 (IST)
21:45 (IST)

Dear me, van der Dussen is really living dangerously but is somehow hanging on. First drives Rahman through covers and sets off for a run. But Mehidy affects a good stop and almost throws down the stumps with the batsman short. The very next ball, van der Dussen pushes Rahman uppishly just wide of Mehidy. That was really, close.

21:40 (IST)

Off the leading edge and gone. Rahman should have had him in the Miller in his previous over but gets him now. That was a top delivery on all counts. Length ball slightly outside off, Miller looking to work in towards the on side closes the bat face early,  gets a thick edge and the catch is snapped up nicely at backward point by Mehidy. Bangladesh well and truly on top now. South Africa 202/4 after 35.1 overs.

21:36 (IST)

Saifuddin is brought back into the attack and Miller certainly enjoying the extra pace on the ball. Banged in short, the left-hander gets into position early and nails the pull down to the deep fine leg fence. That also brings up the 200 for the Proteas. They are 201/3 after 35 overs and further need 130 runs in 90 balls.

21:31 (IST)

What happened there? Mahmudullah has totally misjudged what should have been a relatively easy catch. Rahman brought back into the attack, drops one short. Miller mistimes the upper cut but Mahmudullah does not realise that and thinks the ball is sailing over his head. Instead, it falls just short of him. More grief for the fielder as the crowd behind him gives him an earful. South Africa 196/3 after 34 overs.

21:27 (IST)

The rub of the green certainly with South Africa and van der Dussen for now. Mosaddek with an arm ball  that the batsman does not pick and his beaten all ends up. But to his luck, the ball shaves the leg stump and races to the boundary. The bounce saved him there.

21:25 (IST)

Bangladesh bowling only spin to these two and so far so good for the Tigers. Miller finally gets his favourite sweep shot into play, whacks Mehidy to the deep square leg fence. That can be a dangerous shot too. Miller misses and he will be caught plumb in front. For now, he lives on. South Africa 183/3 after 32 overs.

21:17 (IST)

21:14 (IST)

Three braces for Rassie van der Dussen to get going but this is getting really hard for South Africa now. Three down with most of the well-placed batters back in the hut and Bangladesh bowling really well. Van der Dussen and Miller will really have to dig deep to get out of this. South Africa 157/3 after 29 overs.

21:06 (IST)

Oh, what an inspired bowling change from Mortaza and what a massive wicket this for Bangladesh. Du Plessis gets greedy and looks to after Mehidy but is beaten all ends up. Gently flighted by the bowler, the South African captain races down the track only to miss it completely. He falls for a well-compiled 62 but Bangladesh are on top now.

21:03 (IST)

Some pace on the ball now in the form of Mortaza and du Plessis gets a bit innovative. On middle and leg, the South African captain gets across, gets the scoop out and helps it to the fine leg fence. Miller though is still slightly struggling with his timing.

20:54 (IST)

Du Plessis is trying his best to move around the crease, manufacture a few shots but has largely been restricted by some tight bowling from the pair of Mosaddek and Shakib.

Finally, he gets a delivery where he can clear his arms and the South Africa rocks back and pummels it over long on for the first six of the innings. That also brings up 50 for du Plessis. Can he drive his side to a win here? South Africa 135/2 at the halfway stage.

20:48 (IST)

Spin is the key here. Two experienced batsmen in du Plessis and David Miller are out in the middle and how they handle the next few overs will go a long way in deciding the eventual outcome of the game. For now Mosaddek and Shakib are bowling in tandem and they are doing a mighty good job to keep the batsmen in check. Miller has already had a few nervy moments. South Africa 120/2 after 20 overs.

South Africa vs Bangladesh, ICC World Cup 2019 Cricket Match at Oval Highlights: As It Happened

The ICC World Cup 2019 game between Bangladesh and South Africa will be broadcast on Star Sports 1, Star Sports 1HD, Star Sports 1 Hindi, Star Sports 1 HD Hindi, Star Sports 1 Tamil, Star Sports 1 Telugu, Star Sports 1 Kannada, Star Sports 1 Bangla, Star Sports Select 1 and Star Sports Select 1 HD. Live streaming for the game is available on Hotstar.

PREVIEW: Outplayed and outclassed by the England on the opening day, Faf du Plessis and South Africa can make amends at the Oval on Sunday (June 2) against Bangladesh, who are currently on a high having recently won the tri-series involving West Indies and Ireland.

The Proteas were hoping to slip under the radar with the focus being solely on the favourites at the World Cup, but the meek surrender on Thursday has meant their backs are against the wall.

The lengthy nature of the 10-team group stage, in which each country plays nine matches and the top four make the semi-finals, gives South Africa time to recover, a point du Plessis was keen to emphasise to his players.

"You're going to come up against quality opposition at the World Cup. For me, it's about making sure we look at the areas that we got it wrong and just move on," du Plessis said.

Bangladesh, who in previous World Cups have enjoyed upsetting the apple cart, have made considerable progress since their 2015 quarter-final finish and will look to improve on that.

Keeping in mind the recent collapse, Faf and co will be relieved they don’t have to contend with a Jofra Archer-like situation on Sunday, however Bangladesh with Mustafizur Rahman, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan won’t be pushovers in helpful conditions.

Mortaza, who himself is in a race against time after suffering a hamstring strain against India, will not only need some luck but also his batsmen to show grit and ability to adapt against the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Imran Tahir, all of whom can do irreparable damage individually.

Tamim Iqbal did not play against India due to a thigh strain got hit on his hand during a nets session but is expected to be fit for the match, while Dale Steyn remains unavailable for the Proteas.

The Oval is likely to aid the bowlers a little with the new ball and both sides will look to make a telling impact early on.

Recent Form

South Africa: L W W W W

The South African side came into the World Cup on the back of a 5-0 series win against the Sri Lankans, and were looking to enjoy their games in England before they came undone against the hosts.

Bangladesh: W W W NR W

Bangladesh lost their warm-up game against India before the start of the World Cup, but showed they were in good nick as they remained unbeaten in the tri-series involving West Indies and Ireland in Dublin.

Players to Watch Out For

Lungi Ngidi: The young South African fast bowler has been among the wickets and his ability to bowl fast throughout his spell will make things uncomfortable for the Bangladesh batsmen. Dealing with his spell might just give the opposition the boost to avoid any collapses.

Shakib Al Hasan: The all-rounder is possibly Bangladesh’s most important player and will be tasked with using his guile to hopefully derail the Proteas batting. As a batsman, Shakib will have to anchor his side through the innings and help keep things calm even as the fast bowlers look to cause mayhem.

Team News

South Africa: The Proteas have one injury worry in Dale Steyn, and the veteran bowler will be unavailable for the Bangladesh game. du Plessis’ options are limited, especially in the batting department so there are unlikely to be any major changes.

Bangladesh: Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza and Tamim Iqbal are both in a race against time to be available for the clash against South Africa.

Squads:

South Africa: Faf du Plessis (c), Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock (wk), Hashim Amla, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, JP Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi

Bangladesh: Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Abu Jayed, Liton Das (wk), Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan, Mohammad Mithun (wk), Mohammad Saifuddin, Mosaddek Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Tamim Iqbal
