CHANDIGARH: Going by the temperatures this year, the month of June witnessed a hot start in comparison to the past few years. The temperature on June 1 this year was recorded at 42.4 degrees while from 2015 to 2018, it has been lower than this. The same is with the temperature recorded on June 2 at 41.5°C.
However, in the first three days the maximum temperature in Chandigarh witnessed a drop. On Monday, the maximum temperatures dropped further dropped to below 40°C and was recorded at 39°C. The maximum temperature was one degree below normal. On Monday, the minimum temperature too dropped by a few notches. It was recorded at 31.4°C, six degrees above normal while on Sunday it was recorded at 31.8°C, seven degrees above normal.
The reason behind these high temperatures is the delay in arrival of monsoon in India, weathermen said. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted a normal monsoon this year even as its arrival has been slightly delayed and is now expected to arrive on June 6 on the southern tip of
Kerala. This year, pre-monsoon rainfall, which occurs between March and May, has been the lowest in a decade, according to the meteorological department.
'The reason for these high temperatures is the delay in arrival of monsoon in India and the dry winds that were blowing from the western part of the country," said Chandigarh met director surrender Paul.
The thunderstorm/duststorm accompanied with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) and lightening at isolated places of Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab have been forecast in the next 90 hours. The weather is expected to be dry for the next two days. The clouds are expected to make an appearance from Tuesday onwards.
The weather department stated that,"
Heat wave conditions are likely to prevail in some parts of the Tricity for the next two days. Also, there is a possibility of partly cloudy sky with moderate rain, thunderstorm and development of thunder
lightning on June 6 and 7."
