MADURAI
Commissioner S. Visakan inaugurated the distribution of free textbooks and notebooks to students of Thiru. Vi. Ka. Corporation Higher Secondary School on the reopening day of Corporation schools across the city for the academic year 2019-20 on Monday.
Over 15,000 students studying from Classes 1 to 12 in 67 Corporation schools received the books.
Despite it being the first day, admissions continued and students and parents were seen standing in queues in schools. The admission rate in Corporation schools in Madurai usually fluctuates on the reopening day, according to Corporation Chief Educational Officer P. Vijaya.
“As on Monday, there is at least a 5% increase in the total student strength across our schools. We are afraid we might run out of space because the response has been overwhelming,” she said.
Some teachers in-charge of the admission process, wishing anonymity, said that students waited till the reopening day because private schools often delayed the Transfer Certificate. “Private schools do not function during the summer vacation and often take their time in giving students their TCs. It is common to find admissions continuing for at least one week,” they said. They also said that the consolidated number of students could be confirmed only after a week.
There has been a substantial increase in admission of students for Class 11 for the current academic year, teachers from higher secondary schools said.
The Corporation schools have recorded an overall 98.38% pass in Class 10 after at least two year.
