Gurugram teen drowns in canal while trying to save friend

A Class 11 student, Shashi Kant (17), drowned while trying to save his friend who had slipped into the water.
GURUGRAM: A Class 11 student, Shashi Kant (17), who along with his six friends had gone to Dhankot canal to swim, drowned while trying to save his friend who had slipped into the water.
Around 12pm, the seven friends decided to go to the canal to take a swim, police said. One of the boys, Monu got into the canal and suddenly slipped into the deeper side. Seeing Monu gasping for breath, Shashi Kant jumped into the water and tried to help Monu swim out.
As the water flow was strong, both started drowning. The other five boys started shouting for help, hearing which villagers rushed to rescue them.
“The villagers used a long stick to help Monu and Shashi Kant come out. Though Monu succeeded in grabbing the stick, Shashi Kant drowned,” one of the five boys told police.
After receiving the information, a police team along with the divers of the fire department reached the spot. A massive search operation was started covering a four-kilometre radius from the spot where the boy drowned.
“One of the boy’s told us that they are students of Government Senior Secondary School in Farrukhnagar. As we had to locate and inform the boy’s parents, a team was sent to the school to get the details of his parents. However, the principal denied that Shashi Kant was their student and said that though he had sought admission but could not get it as there were some issues regarding his documents,” an officer said.

However, one of the boy’s managed to inform Shashi Kant’s family and they immediately reached the spot. After several hours of search, the boy’s body was fished out of the canal at 8.30pm on Friday.
“The boy’s family has not filed a complaint yet. We have kept the body in the mortuary. A postmortem will be conducted on Saturday,” said DCP (west) Sumer Singh Yadav.
