NEW DELHI: A day after two men were murdered in Meet Nagar near
Jyoti Nagar in northeast Delhi, a heart-wrenching video had surfaced in which the parents of one of the victims, Govind Bhati, can be seen mourning over his body lying on the road while a crowd is busy recording videos.
The family members claimed that Bhati was killed for resisting a criminal, Anil, from establishing supremacy in the area. Police are now on the trail of Anil and his friend, Avnish, who are rumoured to be related to some policemen.
Bhati’s kin said that he had participated in bodybuilding competitions for Mr Delhi and Mr Bihar titles. This had earned him a set of followers which Anil and his gang members found threatening.
The video shot by a passerby shows Bhati’s parents sitting on the road beside his body and mourning. After a few minutes, a policeman approaches and consoles them. Bhati’s house is a few blocks away from his gym. “My uncle and aunt are shaken by the entire episode. They have been inconsolable ever since they saw Govind’s body lying on the street. No one from the locality came forward to console them,” said Surender, Govind’s first cousin.
Sanjay, Bhati’s elder brother, works at an engineering firm in
Greater Noida. “Govind had been saving money for our sister’s wedding. He had refused to pay protection money to the criminals, which could be the reason behind his
murder,” said the victim’s brother.
Sources said that Bhati had been booked once by police in 2016. However, locals said that the case was a result of a scuffle he had had with Anil’s gang members in trying to stop them from establishing supremacy in the area. They claimed that a couple of days ago Anil and Bhati exchanged blows in a market and the public had to intervene to stop the fight.
Locals claimed that Anil and Avnish are relatives of a serving and a retired policeman. They would often flaunt their contacts to extort money from small shopkeepers in the area.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of a property angle in the murder as Bhati had recently stepped into dealing in real estate. Teams have been sent to Ghaziabad and adjoining areas to nab Anil and Avnish. A few of their associates have been detained for interrogation.
