Nissan Prepping EV Fleet For 2019 UEFA Champions League Final

Nissan will send 363 Leaf hatchbacks and e-NV200 vans to the UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid, creating a fleet that will cover more than 220,000 all-electric kilometers (136,700 miles).

The Japanese automaker is in its fifth season as official automotive sponsor of the Champions League, and this year, it wanted to have even more of an impact on not just the tournament itself, but also the environment – hence all the zero-emissions vehicles.

The fleet will also include a Leaf NISMO RC 2.0 race car, which will be used by Brazilian soccer legend Roberto Carlos to deliver the trophy from the UEFA Champions Festival in Puerta del Sol to the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid (home of Atletico Madrid).

Speaking of Madrid, the Spanish capital has already banned old diesel and gasoline cars from certain areas of its center as part of an effort to reduce congestion and pollution. The new low-emissions zone covers 472 hectares (1,166 acres), and gasoline vehicles registered before the year 2000 and diesel ones registered before 2006 are banned from entering, unless they’re used by residents or meet other exemptions.

The city also has more than 110 car chargers to encourage electrification, with Nissan adding an 36 more to be used during and after the Champions League Final, taking place on Saturday, June 1st.

Nissan is currently preparing to begin deliveries of the new Leaf e+ to European customers. The car features a new 62 kWh battery with a range of 385 km (239 miles), e-Pedal and ProPILOT technologies, plus new personalization options.

“The Champions League Final and Nissan’s electric vehicles are a perfect match because they are both exciting and at the top of their game. We are thrilled to offer attendees the experience of zero emissions transportation on the streets of Madrid, a city that is already at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution,” said Nissan Europe exec Gareth Dunsmore.
