Dolphins have been spotted riding a wave next to a surfing star during a competition in Western Australia.

American surfer Conner Coffin, 25, launched into a barreling wave alongside at least five dolphins on day three of the Margaret River Pro, south of Perth on Saturday.

Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater, 47, said Coffin's ride with the dolphins was one of the 'coolest things I've ever seen in my life.'

Coffin was shocked when he realised he was surfing with a group of dolphins.

'I just got that wave, and then I looked up and there's a pod of dolphins right by me and a perfect blue set coming,' Coffin told Perth Now

'I thought, 'Oh my god this is insane'. I was really excited.'

'It was insane,' Slater agreed.

'There were like six dolphins in the lip. I thought one was going to get pitched.

'That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life.'

Meanwhile, 47-year-old Slater had a rocky start to his heat when he was beaten back by waves.

He managed to pull off some slick rides toward the end and beat Brazilian Willian Cardoso 10.06 to 7.34.

Both Americans will head through to fourth round, the round of 16.
