Incident occurred at Baiyappanahalli railway station yard

A 25-year-old construction labourer lost his life after a heap of mud collapsed on him while he was digging a trench to lay pipes at Baiyappanahalli railway station yard on Thursday. The deceased, Srikanth , is a native of Koppal. He worked as a labourer for PJB Engineering Private Ltd., which had been given the contract, said the police.

Based on a complaint by Srikanth’s cousin Yamunappa, the Baiyappanahalli police have filed an FIR against employees of the company charging them with death due to negligence.

“Srikanth, along with two other labourers, was digging a trench to lay pipes near the railway station’s entrance. It had rained the previous day as a result of which the soil was loose on either side of the trench,” said the police.

While they were working, a part of the trench collapsed on Srikanth. The other labourers were able to pull him out. They took him to a hospital where doctors declared him as brought dead.

Yumanappa, in his complaint, said that the site work manager, Verghese, the site engineer Senthil Kumar and the supervisor, Raju, had not provided adequate safety gear to his cousin.

The police have summoned the accused for questioning.
