COIMBATORE: Graduate teachers - teachers who handle Classes VI to X - from government schools in the state have sought the principal secretary to the department of school education that during transfer counselling for surplus graduate teachers, which is slated to take place this month-end, only those of them without who don't have enough workload should be transferred.
They added that the state is making surplus postgraduate teachers, who handle Classes XI and XII, take Classes IX and X, which is affecting graduate teachers.
T Arulanandam, Coimbatore district president of Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Graduate Teachers Association (TNHHSSGTA) said, in schools which have only one section each in Classes XI and XII in science group, the mandatory 28 periods can't be allotted for postgraduate teachers.
"In such cases, the PG teachers who don't have enough classes are being made to handle Classes IX and X. Because of this the existing graduate teachers who are supposed handle Classes IX and X are counted as surplus and this affects them," he said. Such PG teachers who don't have enough classes should be deputed to nearby schools to handle Classes XI and XII, for which they have been qualified through TRB, he said.
The association also sought that surplus graduate teachers should be counted only after admissions get over in August. In some schools there would be more admissions than previous years by August, said Arulanandam. "If surplus graduate teachers are counted before admissions get over, it would not be appropriate," he said.
He added that they have been seeking the state for several years now to change the student-teacher ratio rom 40:1 to 20:1. "As the textbooks have been revamped and made better an also as the subject matter is heavy, only if there ratio is 20:1, teachers could impart individual attention on students and also the problem of surplus teachers would be solved," he said.
