Members of the Youth Wing of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) demanded the arrest of those involved in overseas job scams under the Goondas Act here on Friday.
Ashok Srinithi, State deputy secretary of the party's Youth Wing, led a demonstration held in front of the South Taluk Office.
“We are not denying that the police have taken actions against such fraudsters, but we want them to be detained under the Goondas Act because they are repeat offenders,” Mr. Srinithi told The Hindu.
Speaking to mediapersons after the demonstration, Mr. Srinithi claimed that the owners of such fraudulent companies allegedly avoid arrests by receiving anticipatory bails and continue to cheat youths in other States. Over 300 people have complained against seven companies involved in overseas job scams and three people allegedly involved in the scams were arrested, he said.
In addition, Mr. Srinithi also demanded that these scams must be investigated by the Crime Branch CID or through a special court as the State police do not have the jurisdiction once the alleged fraudsters move to other States such as Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh.
He further claimed that the money obtained through these scams were sent to Canada, indicating a possible ‘hawala’ deal. On April 24, Mr. Srinithi had submitted a petition to Commissioner of Police Sumit Sharan demanding to constitute special police teams to investigate complaints against those who cheat overseas job aspirants.
He had claimed in the petition that the job scams were happening on a “large scale” in the city and the police were unwilling to accept complaints against the fraudsters.
