PUNE: The
Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) on Friday said it was well on track to make the Metro rail operational on a 12km stretch — across both lines in the city — by December this year.
The authority also added that it has completed 45% of the civil work on the viaducts in both lines.
MahaMetro has identified a 7km section of the Pimpri-Swargate route, between PCMC and Dapodi, and a 5km stretch of the Vanaz-Ramwadi line, from Vanaz to Garware College, as priority sectors. Work in these sectors has been fast-tracked to meet the December deadline.
During a visit to the city to lay the foundation stone for the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro route last December, the prime minister had said he hoped to see the Metro running by December 2019. Following this, MahaMetro officials took up the work on a war footing.
A total of four stations — two in each sector — are expected to be functional by December. The PCMC-Dapodi stretch will have Phugewadi and Sant Tukaramnagar stations, while the Vanaz-Garware College section will have Anandnagar and Garware College stations.
Once the civil work is done, a MahaMetro official said, they will lay high-tension electricity cables, install and commission power sub-stations and signalling and telecommunications apparatus, and lay train tracks.
MahaMetro officials said they expect the trial runs to begin in November before the Metro is made operational the following month.
“The progress of the work in the priority sectors has been satisfactory so far. We haven’t faced any major issue in the recent past. The MahaMetro has taken possession of all the land required,” an official said.
Another official said MahaMetro had also expedited work on the Civil Court-Ramwadi stretch, and that execution plans for the underground section, from Range Hills to Swargate, were being finalized.
Recently, MahaMetro submitted a letter to the civic administration, seeking water supply to the five underground stations. Each station would require 1 lakh litres of water per day
to run the air-conditioning system, the letter stated.
