PUNE: Three men were arrested on Thursday for transporting 52,300kg of ganja worth Rs5 lakh near the
Khadki railway station.
The narcotics cell of the customs department, Pune, intercepted a hatchback and sports utility vehicle (SUV) and arrested the trio — Ashok Pawar of Solapur, Kiran Pankar of Maval and Sudhakar Kamble of Katraj.
Acting on a tip-off, the narcotics cell officials surveilling the area near the railway station intercepted the hatchback and the sports utility vehicle carrying out the transshipment of some material packed in high-density polythene (HDPE) bags on suspicion.
Joint commissioner (customs), Pune, Suhail A Kazi in a statement issued on Friday said, “The search of the vehicles and HDPE bags resulted in the recovery of 52,300kg of ganja packed in 25 bags.”
“ Pawar, Pankar and Kamble confessed to the crime of procurement and transportation of ganja for sale in Pune,” the statement said.
“The contraband ganja valued at Rs5 lakh and two vehicles worth Rs10 lakh have been seized in contravention of the Narcotics Drugs Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985,” the statement added.
Kazi said that the three accused in their statements accepted their wilful and conscious possession of the seized ganja, which was meant for sale to potential buyers in the city.
Kazi said that the three accused were produced before the NDPS special court on Friday.
“The supplier and the customers to whom the drugs were to be supplied to in the city are being investiated,” Kazi added.
