KANCHRAPARA: Scuffles broke out on Saturday between the police and alleged BJP supporters raising Jai Shri Ram slogans and blocking a road in
Kanchrapara through which a motorcade of Trinamool heavyweights was set to pass for a meeting.
When the crowd refused to budge, police chased them with lathis. Minutes later, a few youths rushed towards Trinamool Chhatra Parishad president Trinankur Bhattacharya’s car and banged on it, prompting police to lathicharge again. The mob then converged on Kanchrapara station and blocked several trains.
According to newly elected lawmaker
Arjun Singh, the BJP now plans to send 10 lakh post cards with Jai Shri Ram written on them to
West Bengal Chief Minister
Mamata Banerjee, who recently lost her cool when some men shouted the slogan as her motorcade passed through.
TMC leaders had assembled in Kanchrapara in North
24 Parganas district to chalk out a strategy to retake party offices taken over allegedly by BJP workers, Trinamool sources said. The BJP siege appears to be a reaction to Trinamool workers “breaking open” the lock of a TMC office that they had taken over a few days ago.
