PATNA: Thousands thronged the city mosques on the occasion of ‘Alvida Juma’, also called ‘jumu'atul Widaa’-- the last Friday of the holy month of
Ramzan — to offer
namaz.
Muslim devotees believe that whatever is asked from the Allah with good intention while praying on Alvida Juma is fulfilled. Like any other day of Ramzan, the Muslim devotees fast from dawn to dusk before ‘iftar’. It is said that even those who do not wish to fast for the whole month keep ‘roza’ this day.
It is considered to be sacred to offer food and clothes to the poor on this occasion. Ali Afzal (43), who offered food to the visitors at Jama Masjid near Patna Junction, told this newspaper that the best way to celebrate this day is by spreading love and affection among the people who are in need.
The special prayer service for ‘Alvida Juma’ started at 1pm after ‘khutba’ (sermon). Adil Ahmad (54) of Machhuatoli, who offered namaz at a
mosque near New Market, said, “During Ramzan, we sincerely pray and recite the Quran because we don’t know whether we will be able to see the next Ramzan. This is the reason that brought tears in our eyes while offering namaz. We also ask for forgiveness for our sins.”
Neda Ali Khan, a college student and resident of Boring Canal Road said, “Iftar is special every day but on this occasion we have more varieties which my mother cooks for us. We wear new clothes and offer food to the needy.”
She added, “Alvida Juma is a sign for us that our ‘roza’ is coming to an end.”
