Headstones smashed and graves damaged as heartless vandals destroy memorials at cemetery

  • Thirty-six headstones were damaged at a cemetery in the NSW Hunter Valley 
  • The incident took place at Sedgefield Cemetery near Singleton on Friday night
  • Police are looking for a car, which was parked in the graveyard about 7pm 

Thirty-six headstones were pushed over and some smashed at a cemetery in the  Hunter Valley in New South Wales.

The incident took place at Sedgefield Cemetery near Singleton on Friday night.

'Officers are attending to the crime scene and investigation is in progress,' a police officer at Hunter Valley Police District told Daily Mail Australia.

Police were asking residents or any witnesses if there was any suspicious activity in the area.

Vandals desecrated more than 50 graves in the Ukrainian and Greek section at Rookwood Cemetery in western Sydney four years ago. 

They smashed headstones and broke ornaments, causing more than $500,000 of damage.
