Londonderry: Man dies after 'stolen' car hits lamp-post

A man has died after the car he was travelling in hit a lamp-post and then caught fire in Londonderry.

It happened on Fairview Road in Galliagh at about 04:15 BST and the car involved is believed to have been stolen.

Police and the Northern Ireland Fire Service attended the scene and found the man's body inside the vehicle.

Police say the car is believed to have been stolen in the Oakfield Avenue area of the city earlier.

The car came to rest in a cul-de-sac next to a water pumping station.

The back of the vehicle has been severely damaged by fire and its bonnet has come off.

The vehicle is now covered with a tarpaulin.

Police have also been examining the area around a damaged lamp-post at the other end of Fairview Road.

Officers are working to establish the circumstances of the incident, including whether anyone else was in the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Fairview Road remains closed, while forensic examinations are carried out.
