2 married women attempt suicide

Ludhiana: Allegedly harassed by their in-laws, two married women attempted suicide in the city on Friday. In the first case, three months after her marriage, Manpreet Kaur (24) of Basti Jodhewal attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance on Friday. She alleged that her in-laws were harassing her unnecessarily, and would often beat her.
She alleged that she met her husband on social media, and after the approval of their families, they got married. However, soon after marriage, her in-laws started harassing her. Even her parents refused to help her, after which she took the extreme step. The woman was rushed to civil hospital, where she is admitted. Investigating officer ASI Kulwinder Singh said the police were recording the woman’s statement to proceed further.
In another case, allegedly harassed by her in-laws, a woman attempted suicide by jumping into Sidhwan canal near Gill bridge on Friday morning. However, she was rescued by an onlooker.
Shallu (23) of Shimlapuri, who works in a salon at Model Town, stated that she got married to a man — whom she met on social media — in Mattewara village in July 2017. The man is settled in South Korea, while his family lives in Mattewara. However, after marriage, her husband did not take her along. Further, in September 2017, he came to India for one week and returned alone.

The woman added that her in-laws started harassing her for dowry, after which he left the house and started living with her parents. After that, her in-laws and husband started abusing her on social media. She added that in January, she filed a complaint with police commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill, after which her case was referred to the women’s cell. However, even after five months, nothing has happened in her complaint, after which she attempted suicide.
Shimlapuri SHO inspector Parmod Kumar said: “So far, we have not got any intimation about a suicide bid.”
