Skywalk: Yay or nay? Write to PWD

The skywalk at Shastri Chowk is almost ready

RANCHI: State government has sought public opinion on one of Raipur's most controversial projects - the Skywalk at Shastri Chowk.
Public Works Department (PWD) has asked public to send in their views whether the Skywalk should be completed or demolished or put to some other use. The department has requested the residents to send in their suggestions by post or mail till June 15,2019.
To do so, people can drop their letters in the suggestion box at PWD office or write to 'Executive Engineer, PWD Sirpur Bhawan Campus, Behind Aakashwani' or send an e-mail to skywalkraipur@gmail.com between June 1 to June 15. The project, conceived and implemented during Raman Singh-led BJP regime, is almost complete. Chief minister Bhupesh Baghel had hinted that the government would take public's opinion on the utility of the project. Congress had earlier opposed the Skywalk project at Shashtri Chowk - which was supposed to connect important roads at prime locations and easy congestion on the busy lane.
Since its conception, the project has attracted criticism with residents call it a waste of public money. They complained, they preferred a flyover for regulating traffic instead of a massive ramp built for the pedestrians.
The decision on the project had been pending due to the model code of conduct put in place due to the Lok Sabha elections.
The estimated budget of Skywalk project is around Rs50 crore. While highlighting the disadvantage of the project, executive engineer of public works department said, "The landing of the six lanes will obstruct roads and restrict the scope of road widening in the future."

Earlier in a press conference held at Rajiv Bhawan, chief minister Baghel had said that the projects which do not have people's support, but are on the verge of completion need attention and detailed study.
Talking to TOI, PWD Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu had said, "Though the Skywalk was constructed for the use of pedestrians drew flak since its inception, hence we need time to address the issue and conclude its status of existence."
