24x7 water canal-based water supply still distant reality

Ludhiana: City residents continue to wait for getting 24x7 water supply. The municipal corporation is dependant on the loan from World Bank for moving ahead with the project of canal-based water supply, which was planned seven years ago, for it is a costly affair.
Residents are still counting on tubewells for water supply. The canal-based water supply is essential because of the depleting ground water level in the city.
On Friday, a team from World Bank visited the city for checking the sites where water treatment plant could be installed. While two water treatment plants were to be installed as per the initial plan, the authorities now plan to come up with only one treatment plant for which the site is being finalised. Sangowal and Ladhowal have been narrowed down as the two options for now.
The MC commissioner KP Brar when contacted said things are yet to be finalized and once the site is selected, the total cost of the project will be calculated. She said as of now they have not received anything in writing from the World Bank about this project, but it is being taken up at state government level.

Meanwhile, a resident from Civil Lines Harpreet Singh, said, “Whatever projects were announced in the past are still in the pipeline. There should be some other source of water supply in the city. The authorities however are still unable to locate the land for treatment plant.” He added that soon they will face a tough time if the authorities do not make adequate arrangements.
Notably, the planning of this project was started in 2012 when experts from IIT-Roorkee were called to check whether canal water can be used for drinking purpose. After the experts gave a nod, officials approached the World Bank. However, even at that time many visits were conducted by the World Bank consultants, but nothing could be finalized till Congress government again took up the project and local bodies minister Navjot Sidhu made the formal announcement on September 6, 2017 regarding the project.
