BHOPAL: The water supply will be reduced to twice in a week in the areas relying on the Upper Lake. The areas of Bairagarh and Idgah hills will have to manage with alternate day water supply or once in two days or even twice in a week. The water level in Upper Lake has below the death level and the BMC is still extracting water from the lake. If it did not rain after nine days, the pumps will not be able to take water. Now the areas where water supply is done from Narmada and Kolar will also have to suffer due to the diversion of water from these two supply lines, to Upper Lake lines.
The civic body has reduced the water extraction from the Upper Lake by half. The remaining water is managed from either Kolar or the Narmada. Narmada on the other hand is used for getting around 37 MGD to 40 MGD water in a day. Half of the water the city gets is taken from Narmada River. To supply water in the areas of Upper Lake, the water supply has to be reduced in the areas that are dependent on Narmada or even on Kolar by few MGDs and the water thus will be supplied in the areas of Upper Lake.
On the other hand, the authorities have started identifying the worst affected areas. In a meeting of BMC officials it was decided that the water supply is a serious issue and that the officials were directed to identify worst affected areas. These officials will have to reach out to the corproators and seek information about water supply in their areas. The other strategy will be drawn out after the areas where water supply is worst will be identified first. AR Pawar, city engineer water works said the issue is serious and we will arrange water tankers for these areas if need arises.
