Day after lawyer’s allegation, police rule out murder, say no evidence found yet

MUMBAI: A day after the lawyer for Dr Payal Tadvi’s family alleged in the court that she did not commit suicide but was murdered, the city police on Thursday said it was a case of suicide and no murder angle has been found during investigation so far. However, the exact cause of death in the post-mortem report will help them to plan further investigation.

Advocate Nitin Satpute had made the claim when the three doctors arrested for abetting Payal’s suicide were produced in court. Satpute alleged there were marks on Payal’s back and that there is a possibility that the accused might have “hanged the deceased”.
The “cause of death certificate” dated May 23 issued by JJ Hospital mentioned the provisional cause of death as “Evidence of ligature mark over neck. However, final opinion reserved for accessory examination reports”. The report did not mention any injury on the back. An officer from Agripada police said so far no one from the family had come forward with the allegation of murder.

When asked about the origin of the murder claim, Satpute told TOI, “The family came from Jalgaon to Mumbai with the Bhim Army state chief, Ashok Kamble. During the transit, the family disclosed that they saw the mark and this was conveyed to me by Kamble. I had no direct access (to the family) but only day before yesterday (Tuesday) we were at Nair Hospital where they signed the vakalatnama. I have not had a one-to-one discussion with them as whatever instructions I am taking is indirectly. There is possibility that the mother must have seen the marks while changing her clothes.” TOI’s calls to the Tadvi family went unanswered.
Satpute also suggested that they might demand exhumation of the body and a second post-mortem, alleging that the post-mortem was done by the most junior doctors of JJ Hospital and guidelines were not followed. “The doctors, associate professor or professor and civil surgeon were not part of post-mortem,” he said. JJ Hospital dean Dr Ajay Chandanwale told TOI he would look into the matter.
