The source had stopped in the New England town with their children for lunch and were shocked to see the actor in the neighborhood.
They told DailyMail.com: 'I wonder if he'd been in the clinic for longer than was thought.
'He looked quiet - he was looking around at his surroundings but also avoiding eye contact with people around.
'He didn't necessarily look well, but he wasn't quite sickly either.'
The source added they originally had no idea why Harington was in town and was 'gawking with my kids, wondering if I should ask him for a photo'.
On Thursday, Harington was seen wearing grey track pants, white T-shirt and a brown flatcap.
The British actor left his private villa shortly after midday and made his way across a public parking lot with an assistant to a boutique fitness center, also owned by the exclusive Prive Swiss retreat in Connecticut.

Harington has been at the Connecticut retreat for almost a month, arriving weeks before the HBO show’s finale on May 19
The retreat, which boasts luxury private waterfront villas on the Long Island Sound, costs more than $120,000 a month.
Kit has been undergoing psychological coaching and cognitive behavioral therapy for stress and negative emotions.
His publicist said: 'Kit has decided to utilize this break in his schedule as an opportunity to spend some time at a wellness retreat to work on some personal issues.'
A source revealed that Harington was at the facility 'predominantly for stress and exhaustion and also alcohol'.
The source added: 'His wife Rose is being extremely supportive. Everyone close to him really wanted him to get some rest. Right now, he just needs peace and quiet.’
Harington is allowed to come and go from the extremely private facility near the small town of Madison.

In a two-hour documentary released by HBO after the finale, behind the scenes footage showed Harington tearing up when he learned that his character would kill his on-screen love Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).
'My heart is breaking. I love this show more than anything. It has never been a job for me, it's my life,' he said in the documentary when his final scene was filmed.
