The Greater Chennai Corporation on Thursday introduced a new procedure, named Hotmill, to monitor the quality of new roads.

During the meeting to introduce the new system, Prakash reiterated that the officials and private consultants should perform tests such as core cutting, California bearing ratio (CBR) test to ascertain soil quality, Benkelman Beam Deflection test to check the durability of the roads, bitumen extraction test to find the amount of tar used and sieve analysis test to check quality of gravel before selecting roads to relay.
“All the road works to be carried out in the 2019-2020 year should be done based on the Hotmill procedure. Hotmill will help in maintaining the roads properly and to cut unnecessary expenses,” Prakash told officials. Meanwhile, sources in the civic body hinted that the new procedure has been introduced after the allegations of relaying certain roads that were in good conditions.
As per the new system introduced by Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash, the officials would use Hotmill, which monitors the laying of new roads in four stages. “Hotmill comprises of four stages such as selecting the roads for relaying, preparing estimation, quality control and distributing schedule of works to the contractors,” a Chennai Corporation press release said.
