Almost half of India has been put on heatwave alert, with severe heat waves expected in parts of north and west India in the next couple of days (till June 2). The weather department declares a heat wave when the maximum temperatures reach 40 degrees Celsius in the plains and 30 degrees Celsius in hilly areas.
