Perth students stumble across drug-filled coconut on school exercise

A group of Perth primary school students were left stunned when they stumbled on a coconut filled with drugs while out on a school activity earlier this month.

The incident occurred on May 2 at a school in Perth’s south, when a group of children aged between eight and 12 were practising a mapping exercise on land close to the school’s administration building.

In a letter to parents, the school said the children found the coconut filled with an illegal substance and a $20 note in the adjacent “nature-play” land.

Supervising teachers quickly returned the students to their classrooms and notified local police.

According to the letter, the teachers conducted an “impromptu drug education conversation” in order to debrief about the experience.

“Please be assured that the students did the right thing in immediately informing [the teacher] of the coconut’s presence and cooperating with [both supervisor’s] instructions,” the letter read.

“No students are ever on the adjacent land without adult supervision and we will soon be erecting fencing to secure the land.”

The school encouraged any parent with questions to contact the administration.

It’s understood local police were notified of the find, and seized the item.
