Delhi unit of Congress set for overhaul

NEW DELHI: Following the defeat in all seven parliamentary constituencies in the city, Delhi Congress may make widespread changes in its organisational structure at the district and the block levels in the next few weeks.
The feedback that the five-member committee probing the reasons behind the defeat has so far got is that officer-bearers at the district and the block levels did not work in tandem with the contesting leaders, said a senior functionary. “The overhaul may happen soon after the committee submits its report,” he said. “The 2020 assembly election is just a few months away and is crucial for us. The changes will have to be made well in time.”
The committee, appointed by Delhi Congress chief Sheila Dikshit on Monday, will also suggest changes to strengthen the organisational structure.
The committee, which had its first meeting on Thursday, was earlier scheduled to meet on Wednesday but most of the candidates and the district presidents were unavailable. Even on Thursday, only one candidate — Rajesh Lilothia of North West Delhi — was present.
While Dikshit, the North East Delhi candidate, stayed away due to “pressing engagements”, New Delhi’s Ajay Maken and East Delhi’s Arvinder Singh Lovely were travelling. A source said West Delhi candidate Mahabal Mishra was busy in a “family emergency” while Vijender Singh of South Delhi was unreachable. Only six district presidents met the panel. “The committee will meet again on Saturday,” Delhi Congress spokesperson Jitender Kochhar said.

The committee has former MP Parvez Hashmi, ex-Delhi ministers Ashok Kumar Walia and Yoganand Shastri, AICC national spokesperson and Dikshit’s close aide Pawan Khera, and former MLA Jai Kishan as its members.
Shastri said the panel had discussed the main reasons behind the defeat and got good suggestions from Lilothia and six functionaries. “The late declaration of the candidates gave them little time to campaign. The functionaries said the party should field local candidates.” The committee will submit its report to the Delhi Congress chief next week.
