Jail for jealous man who murdered after threesome, dumped body in bin

A man who murdered his girlfriend's lover in a jealous rage before stuffing his body in a wheelie bin has been jailed for 21 years.

Jason Considine, 36, was sentenced by the Supreme Court of Victoria on Friday after admitting to murdering 45-year-old Ashley Phillips after the couple had invited him over for a threesome.

Also on Friday, Considine's long-term lover Natasha Hogan, 27, was deemed to have already served enough time for her role in helping stash the body and clean the crime scene.

Hogan wept as she left court after Justice John Champion acknowledged she had already served her one year and 10 months' jail sentence for assisting an offender. But she was immediately taken back into custody on another matter.

On May 25, 2017, Mr Phillips attended the couple's Preston unit, where the trio smoked cannabis and engaged in sexual activity.

The couple had decided to take part in a threesome as that way, Hogan wouldn't be cheating on Considine or acting "behind his back".

But during the evening, Considine spontaneously attacked Mr Phillips in the lounge room during a "violent rage" – strangling him and leaving him with a cut to his head.

Considine then collected a recycling bin from another flat, and with help from Hogan, shoved Mr Phillips' body inside.

He wheeled the bin a few streets away and left it on a nature strip while Hogan attempted to clean blood from the floor of the unit.

A few days later, a garbage collector made the discovery when emptying the bin, thinking he saw a human body fall from the refuse while watching the CCTV system in the cabin of his truck.

Police then traced the bin back to Considine and Hogan's apartment, finding a pool of blood still on the lounge room floor.

"You acted in a jealous rage and lost control," Justice Champion said.

"It is accepted you did not have any intention to kill Mr Phillips, but rather to cause him a serious physical injury."

He said the relationship between Considine and Hogan – a mother of two – had been tumultuous and violent, characterised by drug use and domestic violence.

Considine, who has already served 488 days in pre-sentence detention, must serve at least 16 years in prison before he is eligible for release on parole.
