NOIDA: At least two cars and nine two-wheelers were damaged after a
transformer caught
fire in H block of Sector 63 due to leakage of its oil and the flames spread quickly.
The fire in the transformer caused panic in the area around H block market because of repeated blasts in the vehicles that were parked nearby. The incident happened around 12.45pm when the transformer, opposite the office of General Street, suffered a leakage and had sparking.
The sparking soon turned into flames, which spread to the vehicles. “At least two cars, eights bikes, one scooter and two cycles were parked near the transformer, from where the oil was leaking. The fire brigade had been informed by then. Eleven of the vehicles, including two cars and nine two-wheelers, had already been damaged by the time they arrived,” said Ramesh, a visitor to the market.
According to fire brigade officers, as soon as they received information, they asked the power department to immediately switch off the connection so they could douse the flames. An apparent delay in switching off power resulted in damage to the vehicles, which belonged to the staff and visitors of the General Street factory.
Fire safety officer NK Singh said three fire tenders were rushed to the spot and they doused the flames after the power depart-ment disconnected the electric supply.
When the fire tenders arrived, the flames had started spreading to other vehicles as well. However, three two-wheelers were removed from the spot and saved from being gutted.
