Lovelorn cousin tries to kill minor, commit suicide; both survive

Rajkot: In a strange case, a 20-year-old man in love with his 15-year-old cousin sister made her consume acid after he consumed it himself, and then threw her into a well and tried to end his life too by jumping in after her in Jetpur of Rajkot district on Wednesday. However, the minor and accused Atul Makwana survived the attempts and have been admitted to Rajkot Civil Hospital.
After regaining consciousness on Thursday morning, the minor girl told the police that Makwana proposed her on Wednesday afternoon. “The girl said that the accused asked her to accompany him to Rajkot on a date. She went along with him. On the way, he tried to rape her, but when she rejected his sexual advances, Makwana went to a shop and purchased a bottle of acid. He drank some of its content and forced it down her throat as well. After this he threw her into a nearby well and then jumped in after her,” said an official from Jetpur police station.
After regaining consciousness, Makwana told the cops that when he saw his sister, who did not know how to swim, drowning in the well, he jumped in to rescue her and made her stand on a water pump. Then he climbed out of the well and called the cops.
“We have booked Makwana for attempt to rape and murder in accordance to the minor girl’s statement,” added the official.
