Prince Harry has stoked the perennial sporting rivalry between England and Australia with a cheeky sledge ahead of the Cricket World Cup.

The Duke of Sussex made a dig at Australia's Aaron Finch during a reception at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday for the all 16 captains.

'You're getting on a bit now, aren't you? How long have you been playing?' he asked the 32-year-old Australian skipper.

The Australian captain laughed at the comment - while others in the group could be heard sniggering.

Prince Harry then tested the mood of the players by asking them if they were confident and which team was the favourite for the tournament.

He told the Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne: 'Enjoy it, if you’re not going to enjoy it, you might as well not be here.'

Queen Elizabeth also met the captains and posed for a group photo ahead of a garden party at the palace.

The royal guests at the reception garden party included Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

Australia are attempting to win for back-to-back World Cup titles after taking out the 2015 tournament at home, while hosts England are favourites to claim their first World Cup.

Prince Harry will be at the Oval on Thursday to watch Eoin Morgan's England take on South Africa the World Cup’s opening match.
