Patiala: Two killed, three injured in road mishap

PATIALA: Two people were killed and three others suffered injuries in a hit-and-run accident on Grand Trunk (GT) Road near Partap Factory in Patiala district in the wee hours of Thursday.
Six friends were travelling from Sri Amritsar to Sri Hemkunt Sahib in an Innova car - number PB02DF0756 - parked their vehicle on the service lane for a break when an Uttar Pradesh registered canter rammed them from behind and fled the spot told Patiala police.
"The deceased have been identified as Manjit Singh and Jaswinder Singh, while the injured as Deep Singh, Gurpreet Singh, and Gurdev Singh, all residents of Amritsar district in their 40s and the sixth person Manjit Singh had a narrow escape as he had witnessed the canter approaching their car and saved himself after getting out of the way," said the investigation officer ASI Jagjit Singh of Shambhu police station.

ASI Jagjit said, "Six friends were travelling in an Innova car from Amritsar to Sri Hemkunt Sahib when they parked their car on the service lane near Partap Factory. All of them came out of the vehicle for a break and they were washing their hands when the canter hit them from behind. Manjit saw the canter approaching towards them and got out of the way. As per the preliminary investigation, it appears the accused canter driver might have slept while driving and he fled the spot after the accident took place. Manjit noted down the number and on his complaint a case has been registered against the unknown driver of the vehicle (registration number - UP16CT3315)."
A case under section 279 (rash driving), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Shambhu police station.
