Boat sinks in Danube in Hungary with dozens on board
Budapest: At least seven people have died when a tourist boat with South Korean tourists on board capsized on the Danube river in Budapest, Hungary, with several others taken to hospital.
Hungarian media reported that 14 people had been lifted from the river after Wednesday night's accident, seven of them dead.
Correcting earlier reports, it said there were 33 tourists on board and two crew.
The Danube is flooding, with strong currents, and there is heavy rain in Budapest which makes rescue efforts difficult.
The boat was moored near the Hungarian parliament building in Budapest when it was reportedly hit by another tourist vessel at about 10pm local time.
News web site Index.hu cited the boat's owner as saying the boat - the Mermaid - had sunk.
Rescuers were at the scene near Hungary's parliament, including a fire boat. While some people have been rescued a search is underway for others.
Other boats docked on the river banks, including large tourist boats, were shining their lights onto the river, likely in search of survivors.
Index.hu reported that one person was rescued near the Petofi Bridge, which is about three kilometres south of parliament.
'Hableany' is described on the company's website as "one of the smallest members of the fleet ... an excellent venue for cruises and smaller family events."
It has two decks and capacity for 60 people, or 45 for sightseeing cruises.
