Parked 2-wheelers on paver blocks hinder work on FC Road in Pune

People have started riding their two-wheelers through the space between the bollards on footpath
PUNE: Parked two-wheelers on the newly laid paver blocks, bordering footpaths, on FC Road may hinder and compromise the ongoing ‘smart’ work on the stretch.
Sharing this concern with TOI, a supervisor of the ‘smart’ footpath work along FC Road said, “The paver blocks or tiles take some time to get affixed to the ground. If excess weight is put on them immediately after they are laid, cracks can develop in them and loose ones can get displaced. Also, parked vehicles hinder movement of our cement mixers and other equipment. Often, the labourers have to shift the parked two-wheelers to make way for the work.”

He said while people were right about lack of parking space, they should not turn a blind eye to the ongoing work. “If the tiles develop cracks, we will be forced to replace them, which may further delay work completion,” the supervisor said.
A labourer engaged in the work said placing barricades to block entry of vehicles was not a solution either. “If we place the barricades again, it could aggravate congestion on the stretch. Also, we would have to keep moving the barricades to make way for trucks that come to offload tiles,” he said.
Local trader Vijay Abnave said the tiles would get displaced if people carried on with their reckless behaviour. When contacted, junior engineer of PMC road department Pawan Mapari said, “These tiles can not bear the weight of vehicles at this stage and people should exercise patience.”
Regular visitor to FC Road Megha Gokhale said the ongoing footpath work has significantly reduced parking space along the prime marketplace. “People need space to park their vehicles. Since the parking section along the footpath is accessible, we park on that. If parking is not allowed on the space yet, the area must be barricaded,” she said.
Besides, people have started riding their two-wheelers through the space between the bollards on footpath here. “We have to keep enough space between poles of the bollards for a wheelchair to pass. However, two-wheeler riders are taking undue advantage of this space,” Mapari said.

Inspector Kiran Balwadkar of the Deccan traffic division said, “We have been continuously taking action against two-wheeler riders parking their vehicles on the footpath. However, when it comes to legit parking space, the authorities should barricade it for the time being.”
He said, “We are fining people in the range of Rs 1,000-Rs 2,000 for rule violations.”
