Man arrested in dramatic police chase over fatal crash south of Sydney

Twelve days after a young father was killed in a crash south of Sydney, and a week after one man was charged with his murder, a second man wanted over the death has been arrested.

Witnesses have described a dramatic police chase through the Illawarra suburb of Figtree on Thursday morning that culminated in the arrest of Darren Butler, 27.

A woman told the Illawarra Mercury she saw the cars drive across a paddock and go into a nearby creek, before the chase continued on foot.

"They tried to drive straight across the paddock but there was a creek," she said.

"They went straight into it. They all jumped out, then the four of them ran over towards our houses.

"One was hiding behind a house just behind me ... but they got him."

A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed a 27-year-old man wanted over the death of Daniel Clulow was arrested in Figtree on Thursday morning.

He has been taken to Lake Illawarra police station where he is being interviewed, the spokeswoman said. No charges have been laid.

The arrest follows a hunt for Mr Butler and two others – Andrew Russell, 34, and Holly Green, 25 – who were allegedly inside a Toyota Corolla that chased another car on the Princes Highway at Albion Park Rail.

The second car, in which Mr Clulow was a passenger, crashed into the rear of a petrol tanker about 2.20am on Saturday.

The female driver and two other passengers, a man and a woman, all aged 25, were taken to hospital.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District established Strike Force Warrane to investigate and a manhunt was launched for Mr Russell, Mr Butler and Ms Green.

On May 22, four days after the crash, Mr Russell was arrested outside a fast-food restaurant on the Central Coast. He was charged with murder and armed robbery.

The search continues for Ms Green, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
