The police shot at and injured Umar Farooq, an accused wanted in some criminal cases, in Pachhanady, on the outskirts of the city in the early hours of Wednesday.
In a release, Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil said that Farooq was the brother-in-law of Illiyas from Target Group involved in several cases of extortion. When a team of Kankanady Police went to arrest him from a hideout, Farooq attacked it. Police Constable Sandeep was injured. The police shot at and injured Farooq in the leg, in self-defence.
Mr. Patil said that Sandeep and Farooq have been admitted in a private hospital.
The release said that Farooq was trying to regroup Target Group following the murder of Illiyas in his house in Jeppu Kutpady in January 2018. Farooq is said to have teamed up with Surma Imran and was conspiring to murder Sameer, an accused in the Illiyas murder. The Kankanady Police had registered a case. Farooq was wanted in a case of extortion of Hasan Bawa registered in the Mangaluru East Police Station.
