Segenhoe’s Peter O’Brien arranged for several clients to take up southern hemisphere coverings with their mares to bring them to the Australian breeding markets, and already has a number booked in with Juddmonte Farm for 2019 servings.

‘‘Kingman is achieving results which are quite unbelievable,’’ O’Brien said. ‘‘He had five of the eight runners in the Heron Stakes at Sandown [in Britain] a week ago and brought home the trifecta, with the John Gosden-prepared King Of Comedy taking his record to three wins from four starts.’’

The win in the listed race took Kingman’s black-type tally to eight with his oldest progeny just three-year-olds and O’Brien believes the stallion will be a stand-out in Australia.

Gosden had another black-type winner on the same day at Goodwood with Private Secretary landing the Cocked Hat Stakes.

Kingman is a son of Invincible Spirit whose race record was seven wins and a second from eight starts (five group 1s included) and his efforts in 2014 saw him named as the Cartier horse of the year and champion three-year-old colt, and he was the world’s top-rated three-year-old colt.

He carried the silks of one of the world’s most successful owners Khalid Abdullah, who raced the super horse Frankel (Galileo) which stands alongside Kingman at Juddmonte Farms.

Both stallions are too valuable to shuttle to Australia but the stud has arranged southern hemisphere coverings at reduced costs.

O’Brien revealed a number of Australian farms had jumped on the Kingman bandwagon.

Of course, the Invincible Spirit stallion which has become a headline act in Australian racing and breeding is the Mitchell family’s I Am Invincible, which stands at Yarraman Park, Scone. He is the most costly stallion standing in the Hunter Valley in 2019.

Kingman’s southern hemisphere service fee is £75,000 ($137,000) and an indication of his popularity stems from his early sales at European breeding companies.

His yearlings have sold up to 1.7million guineas from his first public auction crop and currently he is the fourth leading European stallion behind Galileo, Dubai and Frankel with an average of £272,900 from 41 yearlings sold.

Justify quality

US Triple Crown champion Justify will face up to an incredible book of mares in his first Australian breeding season beginning in September following a multimillion-dollar spending spree by Coolmore Stud where he will stand.

Over the past month Coolmore signed for seven Australian mares for $10,625,000 culminating with a massive outlay at this week’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Earlier at the Inglis Chairmans Sale, Coolmore splurged on two broodmares – Srikandi and Maastrich for $4.25million. Midway through the Gold Coast Sale they had acquired five of the best mares to go under the hammer for $6.375million.

Their buys on Wednesday and Thursday included:

❏ $2.2 million for Invincible Star, a daughter of champion sire I Am Invincible.

❏ $1.55 million for Global Glamour in foal to Zoustar and a group1 winner of the Flight Stakes.
❏ $1 million for the New Zealand-bred Savvy Coup, the very last lot to sell on Tuesday.
❏ $875,000 for Extra Olives, a daughter to Redoute’s Choice in foal to I Am Invincible.
❏ $750,000 for Eckstein, a daughter of I Am Invincible and a $1million-plus winning mare.

Coolmore announced Eckstein will remain in training for the time being and aimed at the final group 1 race of the racing season – the Tatts Tiara – in mid-June, and has been transferred to Chris Waller to prepare.

Aquis action

Aquis, another of the huge powerhouses in action at this week’s MM Broodmare sale, will also keep two of the mares they purchased in work with Oregon’s Day, a $1 million buy, and Quilista ($950,000) both transferring to Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

They also paid $800,000 for the Kiwi race mare Gift Of Power who will go to stud immediately, and group 3-winning mare Karavali, a $480,000 acquisition, will also go to stud in 2019 and has a mating booked with Zoustar’s first-season son Lean Mean Machine.
