Thiruvananthapuram: The city police have finalized the plan to regulate traffic on the Kazhakkoottam-Attinkuzhi national highway stretch in connection with the construction works of a flyover.
They are expected to start implementing traffic regulations this week itself. The city police commissioner is expected to make official announcement in this regard on Friday.
Mainly the regulation involves blocking vehicular movement along the stretch between Kazhakkoottam and Attinkuzhi junctions and diverting it via service roads on either sides as well as other roads nearby.
On Wednesday night, the police even conducted a trial by blocking the vehicular movement along the highway stretch and diverting it via the two service roads. The service roads were turned into one-way roads for this purpose.
“The trial was conducted to check whether the diversions would cause confusion to motorists. But the motorists did not seem to have much confusion in following the directions,” said Kazhakkoottam assistant commissioner S Vidhyadharan. Besides the service roads, the Kazhakkoottam-Ulloor Road and coastal road via Veli will also be used to divert the traffic.
The police were planning to implement the regulations from June 6 onwards, but now, with the school reopening date being postponed to the same date, there are talks of changing the date in order to avoid confusion, which may affect the school-going students on the first day of the academic year. On the day, the police expect more traffic on the road and they suspect that implementing the new regulations would result in traffic snarls.
Two bus stops at Sreekaryam will also be relocated to avoid traffic congestion when the vehicles are diverted through the stretch. The bus stops would be relocated to a spot that is 50 metres away from the current location.
